Disadvantages of Multiple Effect & TVR Evaporators

All conventional Multiple Effect and TVR Evaporator systems may face problems of scaling, fouling and hence require rigorous manual or chemical cleaning to maintain rated evaporation function. In waste water treatment highly corrosive salts and strong acids are often present, which require very expensive materials to be used.

Bottlenecks of Conventional ME and TVR Wastewater Evaporation Systems

  • High operating costs because of high energy consumption
  • Frequent cleaning/maintenance for descaling - high downtime.
  • Cost of cleaning chemicals - high cleaning cost.
  • Disposal of cleaning chemicals.
  • Pitting on the metal surface due to corrosion even with expensive materials of construction.
  • If replacement is needed, the cost is very high.
  • Separate steam system required for steam operated evaporators.
    - Investment in boiler with additional operational and maintenance costs.
    - Water wastage through boiler blow down.
  • Separate system for condenser cooling system
-Investment in cooling tower with additional operational and maintenance costs.
-Water wastage in cooling tower blow down
It is economically unfeasible to operate conventional evaporation systems for recycling of large amounts of dilute wastewaters.

Most of the industries which have already installed conventional wastewater evaporation systems have kept their plants idle because of high running costs which make them economically unfeasible to operate continuously.
